Student Chapter Field Trips

Overview

SEG invites all Student Chapters and other sponsored student groups to make video recordings of the technical aspects of their field trips. Videos should preferably focus on the geology of world-class ore deposits, or deposits/terrains that are significant in some way related to economic geology. Content should capture field views (including open pits and underground), close-ups of rocks (lithologic units, typical alteration, and mineralization), interviews with mine geologists, participants, etc., in a systematic fashion, such that other students and all economic geologists can learn about the geology and mining of related deposits.

Accepted videos will be uploaded to the SEG YouTube Channel, highlighted here, and shared on social media.
See below for video requirements and submission.Information at bottom of page.

SEG-UWA Kimberley Field Trip (2016)

This SEG-UWA Student Chapter field trip focused on the Paleoproterozoic Halls Creek orogen, including visits to the Speewah Dome Au-Ag Exploration project (King River Copper), the Argyle kimberlite diamond underground mine (Rio Tinto), the Savannah and Copernicus orthomagmatic Ni-Cu mines that are on care and maintenance (Panoramic Resources), the Panton Cr exploration project (Panoramic Resources), an historical site at Old Halls Creek (the town known for the first gold rush in Western Australia), and the Nicolsons Find orogenic Au-Ag underground mine (Pantoro).

In addition, students visited famous geologic landmarks of the Purnululu National Park (a World Heritage Site) and the Devonian Reef complex. Students had the opportunity to visit projects at all stages, from exploration through active mining, to care and maintenance, looking at very different commodities and geologic origins. It also provided them valuable insight into the remote and wild area of Western Australia, which faces several challenges for exploration and mining industry.

The chapter would like to thank SEG and the SEG Foundation, Anglogold Ashanti, HiSeis, and GEOsborne for sponsoring this field trip.
