SEG: Silver Medal

Qualifications

The SEG Silver Medal was established in 1980 to be awarded annually for "excellence in original work in the geology of mineral deposits." The general criteria and their interpretation for determining qualification for the award shall be the same as for the Penrose Medal, except that it will be considered primarily in recognition of excellence by or during the awardee's "mid-career." The recipient need not be a member of the Society.

How to Nominate

To ensure consideration by the Medals Committee and the SEG Council, please use the "Award Nomination Form" printed in the SEG Newsletter or the downloadable form, which is accessible below. If a form is not available, then please include the following:

  1. Name of candidate.
  2. Address of candidate.
  3. A brief biographical summary (use format style in American Men and Women of Science, Who's Who in America, or similar biographical listing)
  4. A short summary of the contributions that qualify the candidate for the award (not more than 300 words).
  5. summary of significant accomplishments/publications (for accomplishments, give specific examples; for publications list no more than 5 titles). Publication lists are considered to be only one measure of contributions to economic geology; many industry associated individuals are not in a position to publish because of the proprietary nature of their work.
  6. Name of person making nomination
  7. Address of person making nomination
  8. Names of three supporters that will be writing letters of support.

Candidates representing each of the three components of SEG membership-- industry, government, and academia-- are solicited.

Members and Fellows of the Society are urged to participate in this important process by nominating outstanding candidates for this prestigious honor. A nomination MUST BE SUPPORTED by signed letters from three SEG Fellows or Members. Supporting letters may be attached to the nomination form or sent separately to the Awards Committee Chair. The deadline for receipt of the nominations by the Committee is September 1 of the calendar year. Nominations and supporting letters should be sent to:
