Description

The 2025 SEG Distinguished and Traveling Lecturers are providing a virtual symposium showcasing their premier talks and offering an opportunity for a worldwide audience to engage with them through immersive presentations and interactive discussions. Each lecturer will provide one 50-minute presentation followed by a question-and-answer session.

The SEG Lecturers are globally recognized individuals that serve as ambassadors for the Society. Lecturers are excellent speakers selected each year based on their significant contributions to the field of economic geology. The SEG Distinguished Lecturer and Traveling Lecturer Programs provide support for the lecturers to present to SEG Student Chapters, universities, and minerals industry events around the world. This symposium will continue the mission of the program to reach a broader audience, especially to students and early career professionals.

Advance registration is required. Students and early career professionals are highly encouraged to attend!

Talk Title: Passage of Mafic Magmas and Formation of Chromite Deposits in the Upper Mantle

Mei-Fu Zhou is a research professor at the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. Prof. Zhou obtained a B.Sc. degree from Nanjing University (China) and a Ph.D. degree from Dalhousie University (Canada). He was a postdoctoral researcher at Laurentian University (Canada) before joining the University of Hong Kong, where he taught for more than 25 years. His research includes ophiolites, large igneous provinces, mineral deposits, and regional geology. He has published more than 450 papers in scientific journals with more than 45,000 citations and an H-index of 118 (data from Google Scholar).

Stephen Roberts

SEG Fellow

Talk Title: Investigations of Modern Vent Sites and the Feedback Loops Between These Natural Laboratories and Terrestrial VHMS Deposits

Stephen Roberts has worked at the School of Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton, UK, for the past 40 years, serving as chair of the department between 2016 and 2020. Stephen has published more than 100 research articles investigating a wide range of mineral-forming systems. He has taken a particular interest in the formation of sea-floor massive sulfides, exploring the natural laboratories offered by sea-floor hydrothermal vent sites. Research highlights include sailing on the International Ocean Drilling Expedition (IODP) Leg 193 to the PACMANUS hydrothermal vent field in the Manus basin and IODP Leg 376 to the Brothers volcano, located on the Kermadec arc. He also participated in a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) campaign to the deepest known hydrothermal vent sites in the Cayman trough. On-land research has focused on the application of an integrated geologic, mineralogical, and geochemical approach to better understand the processes responsible for the Cu and Co ore deposits of the Zambian Copperbelt.
