Field Trip Details

FT01 - IOCG Systems of the Carajás Province, Amazon Craton, Northern Brazil

Date: Sunday, September 29 - Friday, October 4, 2019

Location: Departing from and returning to Carajás Airport, Parauapebas (Pará state, northern Brazil)

Leaders: Roberto Xavier (roberto.xavier@adimb.org.br), Gustavo Melo

Included are visits to principal Cu-Au IOCG deposits of the Carajás region. The Archean-age Carajás domain contains some of the largest known concentrations of large tonnage (100–789 Mt at 0.77–1.4 wt % Cu and 0.28–0.86 g/t Au) iron oxide copper-gold (IOCG) deposits (Xavier et al., 2012). This trip is appropriate for exploration geologists and academic professionals interested in the regional setting and geochemistry of Cu-Au ore deposits. Offered in English.

Attendee Maximum: 24
20% of spaces are reserved for students and offered at a discounted rate.

FT02 - Porphyry-Epithermal Ore Deposits of Northern Chile

Date: Monday, September 30 - Saturday, October 5, 2019

Location: Departing from and returning to Antofagasta, Chile

Leader: William X. Chávez, Jr. (wxchavez@msn.com)

This field trip will visit the Chuquicamata and Centinela districts and review classic supergene-enriched, exotic copper, porphyry copper-gold, and high sulfidation-porphyry relationships. Review of drill core and on-site discussions with mine geologists are complemented by application of activity diagrams to explain and interpret the geochemistry of porphyry-epithermal alteration-mineralization assemblages. Afternoon "take-away" sessions allow follow-up discussions of our observations and questions in a group setting. This trip is appropriate for exploration and mine geologists, and graduate students interested in the application of geochemistry to porphyry-epithermal ore targeting. Offered in English and Spanish.

Attendee Maximum: 20

FT03 - Giant Porphyry Cu-Mo Ore Deposits of the Miocene-Pliocene Age Farallon District: Examples from the Los Bronces, Andina (Rio Blanco), and Vizachitas Systems

Date: Saturday, October 5, 2019

Location: Solace Hotel (Registration: 8:00am, Start Time: 8:30am)

Leaders: Tony Amberg (tony@cartografica.net), William X. Chávez, Jr.

This one-day course comprises geologic presentations by mine and exploration staff from CODELCO, Anglo-American, and Los Andes Copper Ltd., complemented by detailed core reviews of key drill holes from each of these world-class properties. Following discussion of the exploration history, discovery, geochemistry, and current geologic studies of these porphyry systems, participants will examine core intervals representing the characteristic lithologic, alteration, and mineralization features of these immense crustal metal repositories.

This course is offered in Spanish and English and is appropriate for exploration and mine geologists involved with the search for, and development of, porphyry ore deposits; geology students with interests in mineral exploration and mining geology would benefit from the opportunity to observe and discuss the salient geologic and geochemical characteristics of large hydrothermal systems with professional geologists and fellow students.

Attendee Maximum: 35
20% of spaces are reserved for students and offered at a discounted rate.

FT04 - Domeyko Fault Zone Transect: Structural Controls of Giant Porphyry Systems

Date: Friday, October 11 - Sunday, October 13, 2019

Location: Departing from and returning to Calama, Chile

Leaders: Andrew Tomlinson (andrew.tomlinson@sernageomin.cl), John Dilles, Nicolas Blanco

This field trip emphasizes the structural controls on the emplacement and genesis of large porphyry systems, with visits to key outcrops and regional structures in the Calama area. The trip is appropriate for geologists and students interested in the regional and local structural controls on the emplacement of shallow intrusions responsible for the genesis of large porphyry systems and their associated hydrothermal signatures.

Attendee Maximum: 20
20% of spaces are reserved for students and offered at a discounted rate.

FT05 - Ore Deposits of the Maricunga Region, Chile: From Near-Paleosurface to Epithermal and Porphyry Depths

Date: Friday, October 11 - Monday, October 14, 2019

Location: Departing from and returning to Copiapó, Chile

Leaders: Antonio Arribas (arribasa@yahoo.com), Andreas Dietrich

This course will be based in Copiapó and starts by reviewing general geological and exploration issues of porphyry and epithermal deposits common to the Maricunga Belt. Core and exploration project overviews will be offered by resident companies on four representative deposits/districts: La Coipa-Purén, Fenix, Salares Norte, and Caspiche/Cerro Casale. A one-day field visit will include the Salar de Maricunga, views of various project areas, and representative road cuts/outcrops along the way.

FT06 - A Transect Across the Andes Between Santiago, Chile, and Mendoza, Argentina

Date: Saturday, October 12 - Tuesday, October 15, 2019

Location: Departing from and returning to Santiago, Chile

Leaders: Constantino Mpodozis (cmpodozis@aminerals.cl)

This field trip, following one of the main routes through the Andes between Chile and Argentina at 32°40' S, which has been known since pre-hispanic times, comprises a traverse of the Andes following the path of Darwin, who in 1835 was the first to describe the geology of this segment of the Cordillera. This four-day journey across the southern boundary of the current Chilean-Pampean subhorizontal ("flat-slab") subduction segment of the Central Andes will allow the participants to examine and discuss the main tectonic units and the setting of mineral deposits at the latitude of Mount Aconcagua (6,960.8m) the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere.
