Description

Part 1: Short Course  |  Part 2: Field Exploration Workshop

Archean and Proterozoic greenstone belts are host to a significant number of mesothermal ('orogenic') gold deposits. On a global scale, West/Central African, South American, and Finnish greenstone belts, in particular, yield a large resource base and substantial remaining exploration potential. Over the last decades a variety of geological, geophysical, and geochemical exploration techniques have been employed to search for and delineate such deposits.

This practical targeting workshop will introduce core exploration techniques, relevant from craton to license area scale and practice the implementation of these techniques using a state of the art public domain dataset from Finland.

Participants will be equipped with fundamental knowledge in exploration targeting, geophysical, and geochemical techniques and will develop key data interrogation skills essential to modern greenfields and brownfields exploration as well as employment and progression in the mining industry.

Themes

  • Orogenic gold deposits in greenstone belts: Occurrence, characteristics, examples from West Africa and Finland, exploration targeting considerations
  • Geophysical exploration tools: Magnetics and electromagnetics
  • Geochemical exploration tools: Multi-element geochemistry and soil surveys
  • Practical exercise: Interpretation of magnetic surveys using GIS
  • Practical exercise: Interpretation of geochemistry using ioGas
  • Practical exercise: Integration of datasets and exploration targeting

Targeted Audience

  • Industry professionals seeking to improve target generation, geophysical, and geochemical interpretation skills
  • Recent graduates or senior undergraduates interested in the mineral exploration or mining industry and the important concepts related to geological aspects mineral exploration
