Description

Part 2: Field Exploration Workshop  |  Part 1: Short Course

The workshop aims to solidify theoretical knowledge of exploration targeting techniques obtained from working in industry and/or the Freiberg course held in March 2020. The course runs over seven days and will be based in the Central Lapland Greenstone Belt (Finland), a highly prospective terrain for orogenic gold deposits in northern Europe.

After a recap in regional geology, geochemical and geophysical exploration methods and field survey planning using GIS software, participants will learn about regional stratigraphy and visit historic gold mine sites. Participants will have a chance to learn and improve their skills of boulder prospecting, till sampling and geochemistry, as well as ground trouthing geophysical targets generated in desktop studies. Additional evening seminar-type discussions covering the integration of field data with GIS applications and governmental survey data will solidify practical field skills.

Agenda

  • May 28, 2020: Arrival in Rovaniemi, introductory lecture
  • May 29, 2020: Visit to GTK offices and local junior exploration core store (TBC)
  • May 30, 2020: Sirkka greenstone belt stratigraphy and exploration pits
  • May 31, 2020: Sattopoora mine and waste dumps, practical gold panning
  • June 1, 2020: Pahtavaraa area geochemical sampling and mapping (1)
  • June 2, 2020: Pahtavaraa area geochemical sampling and mapping (2)
  • June 3, 2020: Return to Rovaniemi and close

Evening seminar sessions will include practical exercises using public domain datasets, data management in GIS software as well as the construction of a sample farm.

What Will You Gain From Attending?

  • A greater understanding of operational aspects of mineral exploration campaigns, logistics and planning
  • An appreciation of the 'in's' and 'out's' of exploration surveys from initial planning to sample analysis
  • Practical skills in best practice GIS and sampling workflows
  • Insight into the roles and responsibilities of field technicians, geologists, project and exploration managers
  • A unique chance to work with colleagues from all across Europe and the possibility to network
