Description
SEG is proud and honored to offer the second international Michael J. Fitzgerald Student Mapping Course, supported by funding from Michael and Marisa Fitzgerald, as well as Southern Perú Copper Corporation (SPCC). Michael "Mike" Fitzgerald, a University of Minnesota graduate, long supported field-based geologic studies by undergraduate and graduate students; through a generous donation orchestrated by his widow, Marisa de la Vega-Fitzgerald, SEG is funding a week-long mapping course for upper-division undergraduate, graduate students, and recent graduates at the department of Moquegua in Cuajone's Cu-Mo porphyry system, Southern Perú. Participation is limited to 15, and applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Must be an active SEG Student or Recent Graduate member for the 2025 calendar year. Please apply or renew your membership
- Must have completed at least one field mapping course (field camp not necessary)
- MUST have a working Brunton© Standard Transit compass (SEG members receive a 20% discount)
- Must complete and provide SEG; the SEG Waiver, Code of Conduct, Medical Emergency contact, and COVID forms prior to participation.
- Must provide SPCC with medical letter stating you work in high altitudes with a general physical exam (forms must have hospital letter heads), proof of 3 COVID vaccines, valid DNI or Passport, and valid Life insurance documents prior to participation.
Selection of participants is competitive; students in Central and South America are especially encouraged to apply. Travel grants will only be awarded to qualified students and early career recent graduates.

Included
SEG provides students and early career professionals:
- Up to 75% of the roundtrip on economy-class airfare ONLY to/from Arequipa, Perú - airport code AQP; ground transportation from Arequipa to/from Cuajone. You will need to provide us with the airport from which you will be flying on the application to verify flight cost.
- Double-occupancy lodging, breakfasts, and field lunches.
- SEG will provide map sheets and engineer's scales.
- This course is taught in English and Spanish.
Not Included
Students are responsible for each of the following:
- Completion of medical letter stating you work in high altitudes with a general physical exam (forms must have hospital letter heads), proof of SARS-CoV2 vaccinations – SPCC requires three vaccinations, valid (non-expired) DNI or Passport, and valid Life insurance documents. Participants are required to send these directly to SPCC mine staff no no later than March 31, 2025.*
- Participants will need to show proof of SARS-CoV2 vaccinations – SPCC requires three vaccinations, so this information must be provided to SPCC as substantiation of vaccinations.
- Some meals, snacks, water, and drinks, and any incidental expenses.
- You must provide your own, working Brunton© Standard Transit compass, NO other compasses are accepted. SEG members recieve a 20% discount.
- Gear to lightly pack: 3H or harder pencils, colored pencils, eraser, clipboard, reflective vest, sturdy leather field boots (boots- not hiking shoes - are required), hardhat, gloves, long-sleeve shirts, long pants, eye protection, water bottle, lip balm, and sunscreen.
SEG will provide via email a detailed list of field and safety items closer to the departure date, but this initial list of essential equipment requirements.

- Selected Participant Confirmation of Participation: February 14, 2025
- Participants must pay the US$195 registration fee within 48 hours after the invoice is sent.
- Medical Exam and Documents Submitted to SPCC, Deadline: March 31, 2025

*SEG will send out the list of required paperwork items, and the SPCC contact to whom your information is to be provided. Do not send your medical information to SEG. Once you have submitted your documentation to SPCC, please confirm your submission to SEG Student Services at students@segweb.org. Approval from SPCC mine staff regarding your results is mandatory. Without this, one will not be allowed by SPCC to enter the mine property, and your spot will be given to an alternate.
