Students with a mine in the background

Description

This will be the 19th in the continuing series of SEG Foundation (SEGF)-sponsored student field trips and marks the 14th anniversary of the program. Due to lingering uncertainty on travel restrictions, this trip will be virtual, comprising live interactive presentations from mine sites and incorporating filmed segments of site visits. This trip will visit active open-pit and underground mines, and advanced-stage exploration and development projects. One half-day will provide a filmed transect of the ore host carbonate sequence stratigraphy on the Cortez Trend that was developed, and will be led, by Harry Cook, Ph.D. (USGS, emeritus). On the Carlin Trend, site visits include the Leeville underground and Silverstar–Tri-Star (Genesis) open pit mines, reviewing deposit-scale ore controls, mapping techniques and grade control methodologies. On the Cortez Trend, the Goldrush and Fourmile discoveries will be studied, detailing their relationships to the stratigraphy and structural ore controls, planned mining methods, cultural sensitivities and permitting. In addition, the Robertson porphyry- and skarn-hosted deposit will be reviewed, and the complexities of combining multi-operator data sets will be presented.

The geology and mineralization of these deposits and occurrences, their similarities and differences, ore reserves, deposit models, and exploration methods will be discussed. The differing mining methods and process options will also be presented. Other deposits at the northern and southern extensions of these important metallogenic trends will be included in the guidebook.
