Overview

In addition to the student programs funded through the SEG Foundation (Graduate Student Fellowships, Student Research Grants, and Student Field Trips), SEG is offering the Michael J. Fitzgerald Student Mapping Course. Michael "Mike" J. Fitzgerald, a University of Minnesota graduate, long supported field-based geologic studies by students; through a generous donation from his trust, SEG is funding week-long mapping courses for upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates.

  • SEG will pay the bulk of the transportation and lodging costs during the course. Travel expenses will be assessed for each participant, and a portion of the airfare will be covered. Participants will be required to pay a registration fee and certain travel-related costs, such as meals, and must provide required safety equipment. Complete SARS-CoV2 vaccination 2 weeks prior to the course will be required and proof of negative SARS-CoV2 test 72 hours may be required prior to the course!
  • Active SEG Student Members and SEG Recent Graduate Members who have completed at least one field mapping course are eligible to apply. The course is limited to 16 participants, and acceptance is highly competitive.
  • Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion for their successful completion of the course.

These mapping courses are led by SEG Members who are senior in their career and have recognized expertise in the geology of the areas covered. All SEG Student Members and SEG Recent Graduates will be notified of mapping course opportunities and application deadlines via email announcements.
