This Privacy Policy ("Policy") describes how the Society of Economic Geologists, Inc. ("SEG", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, discloses, transfers, stores, retains, or otherwise processes your information when you (whether you are a person, university, or organization) apply for membership or create an account or use other services through SEG's website or applications (collectively, "Services"). Because privacy laws vary from state to state within the United States and from country to country around the world, this Policy may be supplemented or amended by state- or country-specific disclosures ("Privacy Notice(s)"), which will be provided to you at the time and on the page where you provide the personal information to which they apply.

This Policy applies to your use of our Services, and covers information collected in connection with your access to and use of our Services. Please read this Policy carefully. By continuing to interact with our Services, you are consenting to the practices described in this Policy.

Data Collected

Personal data collected by SEG generally include an individual's name, address, email address, and date of birth. They may also include images, and, on occasion, credit card numbers.

How Personal Data Are Collected

SEG collects personal data under various circumstances. Most common are when an individual:

  • Becomes a member of SEG;
  • Registers for a conference, field trip, workshop, or similar in-person event;
  • Registers for a webinar or other online offering;
  • Downloads information from the SEG website;
  • Participates as a speaker, author, or similar capacity;
  • Purchases a product; or
  • Subscribes to a publication.

How Personal Data Are Processed

Personal data of individuals may be used for several purposes. Among them are:

  • Membership administration;
  • Provision of member benefits;
  • Delivery of products and services;
  • Management of subscriptions;
  • Communication of SEG events, products, services, offerings, benefits, and opportunities;
  • Direct marketing;
  • Member and customer data analysis;
  • Development of directories; and
  • Product and services customization and development.

Legal Basis for Collecting and Processing Personal Data

There are several legal bases for SEG's collection and processing of personal data:

  • For the legitimate interests of SEG, including the several uses listed above;
  • To perform a contract;
  • Based on consent; and
  • Legal compliance.

Third Parties with Which Personal Data may be Shared

SEG may share personal data with several other parties. These include:

  • Sponsors of SEG activities;
  • Exhibitors at SEG events;
  • Publishers of SEG publications;
  • Cloud service providers;
  • Service providers who perform functions such as marketing, research, shipping, and fulfilment; and
  • Vendors, such as insurance and credit card companies.

SEG also may share personal data in the event of a merger or asset sale/purchase transaction, and as required by law.

Site of Processing of Personal Data

Personal data of individuals collected by SEG may be stored and processed in the United States, Europe, or any other country in which SEG, its vendors, or partners maintain facilities. SEG generally collects and processes personal data in the US. In the event personal data are collected in the EU and is then transferred to the US, or is transferred to any other country outside of the EU, SEG will do so because there is a legal reason, such as in order to perform a contract, or to achieve a legitimate interest of SEG.

Personal Data Automatically Collected

SEG may collect certain personal data automatically, in particular of individuals visiting the SEG website, using cookies, and other technologies.

Data Retention

Personal data may be retained by SEG for as long as necessary or useful to pursue the legitimate interests of SEG. Other factors may include: the duration of the business or contractual relationship between SEG and an individual, university, or organization; archiving of historical information; and legal requirements, including limitations periods during which a legal claim might be brought. The information that we collect and store relating to you is primarily used to enable us to provide services to you.

Safeguards

SEG has put in place reasonable technical, physical, and administrative safeguards to protect personal data collected by SEG.

Individual Rights Regarding Personal Data

Individuals generally have the right to access their own personal data and to request that SEG correct any errors or incompleteness in their own personal data. The contact information provided below should be used for these purposes. There is also a limited right to request deletion of personal data. Such requests also should be directed to the designated contact.

Opt Out or Unsubscribe

SEG collects email addresses from you so that we may confirm and/or deliver your subscription; communicate with you regarding your order or registration; and alert you to other SEG activities that may be of interest to you. Often times, our "topical" programs are only advertised through email.

You may "opt out" of receiving these email notices at any time by replying to any SEG email and replace the subject line with "Unsubscribe". You may also send an email, from the address you wish to unsubscribe, to "unsubscribe@segweb.org". Please include your SEG Member ID for processing.
