Description

This five-day pre-conference field trip visits the Zambian Copperbelt which is part of the world class Sedimentary Hosted Cu-Co (SHC) district, the Central African Copperbelt. The CACB is the world’s largest and highest-grade sedimentary copper province, hosting around 14 mineral deposits with an overall mineral endowment of approximately 275 Mt of contained copper (+ >5Mt Co).

The trip will focus on the geology and mineralization of the classical Copperbelt and commences with Air-travel arriving at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Airport (Ndola, Zambia). Subsequently, participants will travel on a short ride in a group bus by road, to nearby town Kitwe which will be the base for the entire trip.

Participants will have the opportunity to examine key stratigraphic drill holes at the Kalulushi core repository, which will set the scene for understanding the geology and stratigraphy in which these deposits occur. Following the visit to Kalulushi, the trip will visit two of the historic Copperbelt mines, Nkana and time permitting Nchanga, which host copper deposits positioned in the lower parts of the ZCB stratigraphy, within the Roan Group of the Katangan Succession.

The last visit and highlight of the trip will be a visit to examine drill core from KoBold Metal's flagship Mingomba project. This is located at the northern end of the Zambian Copperbelt. After visiting the Mingomba project, participants will then end the trip and return travel is recommended from Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Airport, Ndola on September 26.

Robert is an experienced Economic Geologist and completed his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Applied Geology at University of Leicester, U.K. in 2007. He has spent the majority of his career working on early stage to advanced stage Sediment Hosted Copper (SHC-type) mineral exploration in the Central African Copperbelt, initially as an Exploration Geologist and in several other capacities thereafter. He has worked on projects in various geological settings of the Central African Copperbelt from inception to completion, at different scales. Rob is a Fellow of the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG), member of the SEG DEI committee, and is a member of the SEG Council. He has participated in previous SEG conferences and was a Speaker at the SEG2022 conference in Denver as well as a panelist at SEG 2023 in London. He is also an M.Sc.
