Technical Writing for Emerging Geoscience Professionals
Description
Strong technical writing skills are recognized as a key asset for anyone engaged in a career in the mineral resources industry and geosciences broadly. This full day workshop will address key elements of effective communication in the applied geosciences, with a focus on improving participants’ technical writing and presentation skills for a wide variety of audiences.
Topics will include: (i) the scope of geoscience technical writing in the mineral resources private sector, academia, and government; (ii) recognizing key technical deficiencies and challenges when writing and communicating as a professional geoscientist; (iii) writing style, and improving precision in various forms of technical communication; (iv) integrating technical writing with effective data presentation; and (v) the ethics of technical communication in geosciences. A variety of cumulative, short exercises will teach participants to (i) identify and write appropriately for a specific target audience, (ii) improve their critical editing skills including revising a technical draft, and (iii) properly cite other work, organize their writing, and track writing progress relative to impending deadlines.
Participants should be prepared to work on critical editing of a piece of their own work, comprising a 2-3 page excerpt from a technical report, thesis, or other relevant geoscience communication format that is completed, or in progress.
The workshop will provide each attendee with a copy of the book The Dictionary of Geology (New Penguin), which they may use as a reference material during the workshop and keep for their own professional development.
Lunch will be provided, and all attendees will receive certificates of participation.
