Erzgebirge - The Ore Mountains of Saxony and Bohemia: Old District–New Opportunities - Sn, W, Li, Ag, Base Metals
Description
This 8-day trip will convene in Freiberg, Germany, on August 17. The following day will begin with a health-safety and logistics briefing and will continue with a seminar, organized by the SEG Student Chapters at Freiberg and Brno, on the history, geology, metallogeny and current research of this historic mining district that has been central to the economic development of central Europe for the last millennium and which will have a key role to play in Europe's transition to a zero-carbon economy.
Day 3 is devoted to visits to active exploration projects in the Freiberg district and to the Reiche Zeche research and visitors mine of the TU Bergakademie in Freiberg. Visits to the lithium-tin enriched greisen systems at Sadisdorf, Altenberg, and Krupka will be the highlight of Day 4, overnighting in Teplice in the Czech Republic. On Day 5, participants will study the greisen system at Cinovec-Zinnwald and the Marienberg 5-Element vein system and move on to overnight in Oberwiesenthal, Germany. The Tellerhäuser Sn-Zn-In skarn system and related occurrences of skarn mineralization at Waschleithe and Breitenbrunn will be the focus of Day 6.
Day 7 will involve visits to the Gottesberg exploration project and to the Hubstock greisen, returning to Freiberg that afternoon. On Day 8 drill cores representative of the district's geology and mineralization will be viewed at several exploration drill core sheds around Freiberg, including the core repository of the Saxonian Geological Survey. These visits will formally conclude the excursion late in the afternoon of August 24.

About the Leaders
Jens Gutzmer
Helmholtz Institute Freiberg
Jens is an economic geologist and director of the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology in Germany. As a visiting professor, he maintains close links with the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence for Integrated Mineral and Energy Resource Analysis at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. Most of his recent research has focused on geometallurgy and mineral systems analysis, with a particular focus on the ore deposits of the Erzgebirge / Krušné hory region.
Mathias Burisch-Hassel
Colorado School of Mines
Mathias is Associate Professor at the Colorado School of Mines and Visiting Scientist at the Helmholtz-Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology. From 2016 to 2022, he was Assistant Professor at the TU Freiberg, after he received his Ph.D. from the University of Tübingen in 2016.
Mathias' research aims to understand geological processes that result in the formation, transformation, and preservation of mineral resources associated with hydrothermal systems. Together with his team, he constructs metallogenic models that provide a scientific framework for the mineral exploration industry.
Vojtech Sesulka
Independent Consultant
Vojtech is an independent geological consultant with over 10 years of experience in the mineral exploration industry. As senior geologist and 3D modeler he participated in exploration projects for battery metals and gold in Europe, West Africa, Central Asia, or North America.
Vojtech is a long-time member of the geological team on the Cinovec Li-Sn-W deposit.
Vojtech holds a Ph.D. degree in applied geology from the Masaryk University in Brno, and is a member of the European Federation of Geologists and Czech Association of Economic Geologists.
