Description

Fennoscandia is currently one of the most active exploration areas in Europe. The field trip will emphasize the importance of balanced land use in the context of exploring for and developing the minerals essential to achieve the vision of the European Union's "Green Deal" with visits to mines and recent discoveries.

This 9-day trip will begin in Rovaniemi with a presentation by GTK on the lessons learned from the EU-funded MIREU project on balanced land use and stakeholder engagement during exploration and mining. The trip will then continue with visit to gold deposits hosted within the Peräpohja belt (PB) and Central Lapland Belt (CLB), including study of drill cores from Mawson Gold's Rompas-Rajapalot Au-Co (PB), Rupert Resources' recent Ikkari Au discovery and the Pahtavaara Au mine (CLB).

The precious metal theme will continue on Day 3 with a visit to Europe's largest gold mine at Kittila (CLB). A change of focus on Days 4 and 5 to magmatic sulfide-hosted deposits will be highlighted by study of drill core from Anglo America's Sakatti Ni-Cu-PGE deposit (CLB) and Boliden's Kevitsa Ni-Cu-PGE mine (CLB) before transferring to northern Sweden in the late afternoon. Days 6 and 7 will center in northern Norbotten, with mine visits to Boliden’s Aitik Cu and LKAB's Malmberget iron ore before transferring to the Skellefteå VMS district and a visit on Day 8 to Boliden's core store for study of representative examples of the district's mineralization. The trip will conclude on Day 9 with a visit to Critical Metals' Varuträsk Li project.

Jukka-Pekka Ranta

University of Oulu

Jukka-Pekka received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Oulu in 2018. He has a strong research background using mineralogical, mineral compositional and whole-rock geochemical information in studying the characteristics and genesis of the mineral deposits. Jukka-Pekka is a University Lecturer mineralogy and economic geology in the Oulu Mining School (University of Oulu) and holds Title of Docent (Adjunct Professorship) in "Applied mineralogy and hydrothermal ore-forming processes" in the Oulu Mining School. Jukka-Pekka is also founder of Minerale Geoconsulting Oy, providing petrography and compositional data analysis services for mineral exploration and mining companies.

Nils Jansson

Luleå University of Technology

Nils received his Ph.D. degree from Luleå University of Technology, Sweden, in 2011 with a thesis entitled "The origin of iron ores and their relationship with polymetallic sulfide ores, Bergslagen, Sweden", supervised by Prof. Rodney Allen. Nils was engaged in exploration for volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits in Sweden for Boliden Mineral during 2011-2014 and has been employed as a researcher and teacher at LTU since 2014. His main research interest lies in integrating structural, stratigraphic, geochemical, and mineralogical data for unraveling the genesis of complex, metamorphosed, Proterozoic iron oxide and sulfide deposits.
