Life Cycle Assessment to Explore for Low Carbon Mines
Description
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has become the standard tool to quantify environmental impacts of production, manufacturing, and indeed the whole cycle of use and re-use of products and materials. It can be applied not only to working mines but is a powerful tool during exploration from about pre-feasibility stage onwards to determine the impacts of the proposed mine, and thus identify the main challenges and actions that will reduce the future impacts. The course will introduce the LCA technique to exploration geologists and illustrate its use with case studies.
The workshop will provide an overview of the importance of the Life Cycle Assessment and the LCA process. Participants will be guided through the methodology and tools employed during LCA, with focus on data collection, inventory analysis, and impact assessments and then compare MineLCA and other relevant tools. Using LCA during the different phases of project development to inform decision making will be considered from early exploration through to scoping and prefeasibility studies, as well as geometallurgy and MineLCA. Emphasis will be on how to interpret the outcome of LCA to guide decision-making in the project lifespan.
Attendees will receive certificates of participation. View all workshops.
