Description
The annual SEG Student Chapter Earth Day Symposium is a free virtual event organized each year by a different SEG Student Chapter. It brings together aspiring young economic geologists and SEG student members to reflect on the challenges, opportunities, and roles of early career professionals in a world that is experiencing rapid climate change and other ecological and societal challenges.
This year's symposium, hosted by the Cornell University SEG Student Chapter, will center around the theme "Minerals: The Foundation to a Sustainable Future", providing a forum for students to share their research, ideas, and experiences related to sustainable mining, renewable energy, and other topics at the forefront of economic geology. Through this symposium, SEG Student Chapters aim to inspire and empower the next generation of geoscientists to make a positive impact on the minerals industry and our planet's natural ecosystems.
This virtual event will feature a variety of presentations and discussions, including a keynote speech by SEG President Stuart Simmons and pre-recorded technical presentations by SEG student members from around the world. Students will also showcase short perspective videos discussing their experiences within academia and industry, and a panel discussion with diverse experts will address the continued evolution of the relationship between economic geology and resource sustainability.
Students are encouraged to attend, as they will gain valuable insights into their career opportunities, particularly in the context of the ongoing energy transition. SEG Student Chapter members can also showcase their chapters' work and meet other professionals working in fields that may be of interest for future career paths.
For those SEG Student Members whom are interested in submitting either a research or perspectives video for the symposium, please contact Valeria Nogales for additional information at vsn8@cornell.edu.
