Description

SEG is pleased to announce the offering of the first Michael J. Fitzgerald Student Mapping Course. Michael "Mike" Fitzgerald, a University of Minnesota graduate, long supported field-based geologic studies by undergraduate and graduate students. Through a generous donation from his trust, SEG is funding a week-long mapping course open to ACTIVE SEG Student Members (upper-division undergraduate and graduate students) and SEG Recent Graduate members. All applicants must have completed at least one previous mapping course.

Details

SEG Students and Recent Graduates wishing to participate in this mapping course will be selected on a competitive basis and should consider the following in their application process:

  • Selection is competitive and limited to 15 participants.
  • Selected participants will have a majority of their airfare (to and from Albuquerque (ABQ)) covered, via an SEG travel grant. However, each participant must have the ability to pay a portion of his/her airfare, some meals (dinners), incidentals, and a registration fee.
  • SEG will provide transportation from Albuquerque (ABQ) to/from the field area, double-occupancy lodging, breakfasts, and in-the-field lunches.
  • Passport and any visa requirements are the responsibility of the participant.
  • Participants will assemble at Albuquerque International Airport (ABQ) on the afternoon of the 3rd November (participants arrive no later than 1:00 pm) and may plan to depart ABQ no earlier than 12:00 noon on Saturday, 9th November.
  • Application submission deadline is July 31, 2019 (application and supporting documents as listed below should be submitted together to Vicky Sternicki, students@segweb.org):
    • written proof that the applicant has taken at least one field mapping course
    • a letter of interest, stating how the applicant would benefit from the course
    • a letter of endorsement from the applicant's advisor that also explains how the applicant will benefit from the mapping course
  • Reviews will be completed by August 14, 2019. Selected participants must confirm acceptance, and pay a US$195 registration fee, by August 20, 2019.
  • Participants must supply required PPE gear consisting of a hard hat, reflective vest, steel-toed boots, gloves, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and eye protection.
  • Participants must provide and know how to use their own Brunton Compass.
  • SEG will provide engineer’s scales, map sheets, and measurement tapes.
  • All participants, prior to the course begin date, will be required to sign a Waiver form, Code of Conduct form, and complete a Medical Contact form showing proof of insurance and medical/family contact information.
  • Students will receive a Certificate of Completion for their successful participation in the course.
