Description
SFT 2022 will be the 20th in the continuing series of SEG Foundation (SEGF)-sponsored student field trips and marks the 16th anniversary of the program. The Skellefte district has been one of the most important mining districts of Europe for the last century with over 85 volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits and occurrences, including the Kristineberg, Renstrom and Au-rich Boliden VMS deposits. A number of lode gold, porphyry Cu-Au deposits and nickel deposits and occurrences are present in the district as well, including deposits such as Björkdal and Tallberg. The district is underlain by a sequence of Paleoproterozoic volcano-sedimentary rocks that were strongly deformed and metamorphosed to greenschist to lower amphibolite facies. This trip will visit active mines, and advanced-stage exploration and development projects.
The geology and mineralization of these deposits and occurrences, their genesis, the effects of deformation, their similarities and differences, ore reserves, deposit models, and exploration methods will be discussed. Responsible mining and exploration methods will also be discussed.
Accepted SEG Student Members will participate in field visits (mine visits, core shack visits to look at core, and key outcrop visits) and oral presentations to discuss the metallogeny of the world-class Skellefte district and its geology. Active SEG Student Members enrolled at an accredited university are eligible to apply and must submit the Student Application Form by June 20, 2022.
Acceptance is competitive and limited to 15 students for this exceptional trip. Selected students will be notified on-or-before July 6, 2022. TRAVEL OR VISA MAY BE REQUIRED FOR THIS FIELD TRIP – students must check their requirements. Selected students must confirm participation within two-days of their receiving notification of acceptance.
